Richards record highlights College
Classic Series closing
BY DEAN
GREENAWAY
The 9th annual
Highland Spring College Classic Series ended on Tortola last Saturday, with
Carlisle’s House Rasheed Richards establishing the fourth record of the 2004
series.
Richards made
his first trek under the 12 minute barrier by slicing 16 seconds off the mark he
established last week, with time of 11 minutes, 56.7 seconds, eclipsing the
12:12.4 in his last outing.
Assistant race
director Stephanie Russ Penn said she was happy with the series. “Overall, it
was a very good, a very positive series,” Penn said. “In terms of numbers, I
would say the weather played a big factor in causing the numbers to be lower
than 2003 when we had several races over 200 participants, but we can’t
complain. We had excellent competition, broken records and people realizing that
consistency really pays off. I applaud everyone who came out and to all the
medal winners I say congratulations and to everyone as well, I say
congratulations for just coming out and participating.”
Richards, who
was third overall among all divisions, said the first part of the race could
have been better. “Going up on the first mile, I ended up too far behind so I
had to do a lot of running to make up some ground to catch the leaders,”
Richards explained. “I could have tried a little harder, but, I gave it a good
run.”
Despite his
heroics, his team failed to defend its BVI High School Cross Country title, and
slipped to second as the title was won by Lettsome House, with Lincoln taking
third. “I don’t know why the participants aren’t showing up and even our house
leader isn’t showing up,” Richards noted. “I really don’t know what’s
happening.”
Linden Peters
grabbed his fourth successive title after producing the day’s fastest time of
11:42.2. “The series was a good one,” Peters reflected. “There were a lot of
people turning up to run which I thought was good. Next year, hopefully it will
be better and it was a good run today.”
Darwn
Peters—no relation to Linden—pulled off a 3-peat victory with her winning time
of 13:54.3—some 12 seconds off the record she established last week. Peters said
she felt that she could have produced a faster time. “The course was wet and
very slippery, but it was an alright race,” said Peters who had three races
under 14 minutes. “I expected to run a little faster, but honestly, I think that
my training backed off just a little bit from what I started out with and that’s
why I think I didn’t reach the goal of running closer to 13 minutes.”
Led by
outstanding male and female division athletes Lauren Fredericks and Deon Edwin,
Althea Scatliffe Primary School won the Primary Schools Cross Country division
for the fourth successive year. Montessori School placed second with Enis Adams
grabbing third.
Kitty Hasted
won the one mile girls division by relegating defending Chloe Rufflesmith to
second while Chemoia Hodge placed third. Joush Victor picked up where his
brothers Ray and Rowan left off by taking the boys one mile division. Kalik
Aaron was second with Kian Chalwell third.
The Rotary
Club of Road Town won the Service Clubs Cross Country category to defend its
title against the Rotary Club of Tortola and the Lions Club of Tortola.
